People usually enjoy the holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's). However, these days have become difficult for me. When my son was five, a terrible accident resulted in the amputation of his right hand on Thanksgiving Day. I’ve been in court for nearly a decade, and my divorce was finalized two days after Christmas. Years later, a wonderful person abruptly ended our relationship on New Year’s Eve. I wish I could fall asleep on November 20th and wake up on January 2nd.
The mind is fascinating. It remembers things we don’t want to recall but forgets crucial information. I’d love to experience the joy and excitement others have at the end of the year, but I struggle with it.
Every year at this time, I recall past events. One common thread is feeling trapped and powerless. Many factors contribute to this, including responsibilities and freedom. Sometimes, I feel like I’m constantly working, eating, and sleeping to survive.
With the economy in a slump, more and more people are feeling down. The elderly are on fixed incomes, and those who lose jobs or take substantial pay cuts barely manage to make ends meet. Friends who are seriously ill, accidents that take lives before they should, strained relationships, and doubts about self-worth are all part of the picture.
One of my friends is in prison. He can’t go anywhere. He works non-stop, day and night, because he has no choice. He drinks, eats, sleeps, and dresses because he has to or faces serious consequences.
He once told me, “People say live for today. But the only thing that keeps me going through that prison is tomorrow.” He said there are times when you can’t live for today, but you have that little hope and love that tethers us to it—something so far away today but still there tomorrow.
I totally get where he’s coming from sometimes. I’ve always been a person of strong values and morals, and I know that’s what keeps me going through tough times. It’s not like I have some big, life-changing things going on, but it’s still pretty cool to have those inner strengths.
I’m so glad I have those strings. Some people rely solely on external factors, such as their appearance or social status, which can lead to trouble. But I’m happy with how I look and feel, so I don’t try to change myself. That’s why I participate in activities like races to keep my life balanced. You know, life is full of ups and downs, and it’s essential to have things to keep you going.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and cherish those strings that make you who you are.
